On The Spark, we spoke with Dr. Elaine Farkas, associate professor of Physical and Environmental Sciences at Commonwealth University’s Mansfield campus, about the importance of astronomy education and the role the Strait Planetarium plays in connecting people of all ages with the wonders of the night sky. Named after beloved professor George B. “Daddy” Strait, the planetarium has served as a gateway to science and space exploration for decades, offering educational programs that extend far beyond the classroom.

Our conversation explored why astronomy remains relevant today, from helping people better understand Earth’s place in the universe to inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and lifelong learners. Dr. Farkas also discussed the unique advantages of observing the night sky in north-central Pennsylvania, the growing challenge of light pollution, and how communities can help preserve dark skies for future generations. We also highlighted the planetarium’s partnership with the PA Wilds Astronomy Club, which offers hands-on opportunities for those interested in exploring astronomy.
