On The Spark, we spoke with Kristian Berg, senior producer at WPSU-TV, about his new television special, The Whiskey Rebellion, which explores one of the most significant conflicts of the early United States. Berg discussed the process of bringing the story to television and the historical events surrounding resistance to the federal government’s whiskey excise tax in the 1790s.
We were also joined by Gary Smith, a Lancaster volunteer who participated in the production as an excise tax inspector at the historic Eichelberger Distillery in Dillsburg. Smith, who is also knowledgeable about the music of the Revolutionary period, shared his perspective on the production and the history being recreated. The conversation offers a behind-the-scenes look at how historical storytelling and reenactment bring the Whiskey Rebellion to life for a modern audience.
The Whiskey Rebellion airs on WITF TV Tuesday, August 11, at 7:30 p.m., with an encore presentation Monday, August 17, at 9 p.m.
