From smoky skies and dangerous heat to powerful thunderstorms and tropical humidity, this summer’s weather has left many central Pennsylvanians asking the same question: What is going on?

On The Spark, ABC27 meteorologist Dan Tomaso helped explain the recent stretch of unusual weather and why so many different weather events have occurred in such a short period of time.

The region has experienced several rounds of Canadian wildfire smoke that reduced air quality and created hazy skies, along with prolonged heat and humidity that fueled strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, heavy rain and localized flooding. Forecasters say the same weather patterns that trap heat and humidity can also help transport wildfire smoke into the Mid-Atlantic, while cold fronts moving through the region often trigger severe storms before briefly bringing cooler, drier air.

Tomaso also discussed whether central Pennsylvania is experiencing drought conditions, how heavy downpours can still leave some areas dry, and what residents can expect as summer continues. While the weather has felt especially chaotic, understanding the science behind these shifting patterns can help people better prepare for whatever Mother Nature brings next.
