Summer camp isn’t just for kids anymore. Across Pennsylvania, adults are finding opportunities to unplug, learn new skills and reconnect with the joy of camp through experiences designed specifically for grown-ups.
On The Spark, Leigh Hurtz, camp director for the Band Camp for Adult Musicians (BCFAM), and Bill Reifsnyder, executive director of Camp Runabout, shared how their programs are helping adults rediscover the fun, friendships and personal growth that come with summer camp.
At BCFAM, adult musicians of all skill levels spend a week rehearsing, performing and learning from professional instructors while connecting with others who share a passion for music. Whether participants are returning to an instrument after years away or play regularly, the camp creates a welcoming environment focused on lifelong learning and creativity.
Camp Runabout offers a different kind of adventure, combining outdoor recreation with relaxation in the Pocono Mountains. Adults can participate in running, hiking, kayaking, zip-lining, arts and crafts, campfires and other activities, choosing their own pace throughout the weekend.
Both camps show there’s no age limit on trying something new, making new friends or creating lasting summer memories. Whether through music or outdoor adventure, these programs are helping adults reconnect with hobbies they love while building a sense of community along the way.
