York County History Center Hosts Spark Travels Conversation on After Ike and the Interstate Highway System

  Asia Tabb is the Host and Producer for WITF’s The Spark.
  
  She began her start in radio when she joined legendary radio/ host producer, Doc Christian. She worked closely with Doc for her role on “The Gospel Express, on WHOV 88.1 FM and was a host for “Unrestricted Praise” at Praise FM.
  
  Previously she was an anchor in Shreveport, Louisiana at KTAL/KMSS. Asia also worked as a Multi-Media Journalist at WHP-TV here in Harrisburg, PA.
  
  Asia got her break into news at KTVO in Ottumwa, Ia. While the 2020 caucuses were gearing up. Asia followed many candidates through their campaign trail from Senator Cory Booker, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, and 46th President of the United States Joe Biden.
  
  Asia was born and raised in Norfolk, Va. She graduated from Old Dominion University in 2018 with a major in Communications.
  
  Asia is extremely friendly so don’t be afraid to say hi if you see her out and about.

What began as a cross-country military convoy more than a century ago would eventually reshape how Americans travel, work, and connect. On a special edition of The Spark, recorded live during WITF’s Spark Travels event at the York County History Center Museum and supported by Capital Blue Cross, we explored the story behind WITF’s documentary After Ike: The Journey That Changed America. The documentary traces the 1919 Army Transcontinental Motor Convoy, which included a young Dwight D. Eisenhower and helped inspire the creation of the nation’s Interstate Highway System.

Joining the conversation were Kay Shelton Kozak of the Lincoln Highway Association, Dr. Brian C. Black of Penn State Altoona, and Dr. Jessica J. Kelly of Millersville University. Together, they discussed how the Interstate Highway System revolutionized commerce, tourism, and everyday travel while fundamentally changing the American landscape. The panel also examined the lasting consequences of highway construction, including neighborhoods divided or displaced by new roadways and the complex legacy those projects left behind.

Recorded before a live audience, the discussion explored both the opportunities created by the Interstate system and the communities that paid a price for its development. From the historic Lincoln Highway to today’s transportation network, the panel reflected on how decisions made decades ago continue to shape life in Pennsylvania and across the country.
