When people think of Pennsylvania, they often picture Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and miles of farmland. But author Tory Mather says the Commonwealth has much more to offer. In her new book, Scenic Natural Wonders of Pennsylvania, Mather highlights 84 destinations ranging from waterfalls and overlooks to caves and scenic natural areas that showcase the state’s diverse landscape.
Mather, who has spent the past decade exploring Pennsylvania, visited more than 200 locations while researching the book. Her goal was to create a guide that appeals to everyone—from avid hikers looking for a challenging trail to families seeking an easy roadside stop. “I wanted anyone who picked up the book to find a place near them and something that fits their activity level,” Mather said.
Among her favorite destinations are Ricketts Glen State Park, OhioPyle State Park, and Indian Echo Caverns. Mather believes many Pennsylvanians overlook the beauty in their own backyard. “Travel should be an experience that feels new to you,” she said. “Whether it’s 20 minutes away or two hours away, it’s all travel and it’s a new experience.”
