Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, is often recognized as the birthplace of Memorial Day, tied to a tradition that began during the Civil War and eventually grew into a national observance.

On The Spark, author and former Historic Boalsburg board member Cathy Horner discusses the history behind the tradition and the story of the three women whose walk to a cemetery to honor fallen soldiers helped inspire what would become Memorial Day.

Drawing from her book Three Women, a War, and a Tradition, Horner explores the local history, community memory, and events that shaped one of the nation’s most recognized holidays.
