On today’s episode of The Spark, we reviewed Ephraim Slaughter: Freedom’s Witness, the powerful one-act play presented by Sankofa African American Theatre Company and Gamut Theatre Group in partnership with the National Civil War Museum for the Annual Dauphin County Black History Celebration. Actor Marcus McGhee discussed bringing to life the story of Ephraim Slaughter, a man born enslaved who became a Union Army veteran and respected Harrisburg community leader. The play, written by Philadelphia playwright Teresa Miller and directed by Sharia Benn, transports audiences to a Harrisburg room in 1943, where memory and history converge to explore the true cost of freedom and the resilience required to claim it. We also highlighted the decade-long partnership that has brought thousands of local students to live productions celebrating Black history, and how this latest collaboration continues that mission by restoring a powerful local story to the stage.
