The YWCA of Greater Harrisburg is continuing its mission to support veterans in need, offering a range of housing and employment services for those experiencing homelessness or facing other challenges.
Mary Quinn, president and CEO of the YWCA, explained that their veteran services program is unique among YWCAs nationwide. “We have a lot of housing experience and helping individuals connect with jobs,” she said. “We took that expertise… and applied it into our veteran services, helping veterans who are homeless and at risk find housing and connect back into the workforce.”
At-risk veterans are those facing unstable living situations, behind on rent, or dealing with additional challenges such as mental health or substance use concerns. Quinn emphasized the organization’s holistic approach: “We’re really looking, assessing them holistically to see what their skillsets are, what they would even like to do. If they express that they want to learn a new skill or trade, then we’ll help connect them to resources, whether it’s going back to school or learning a trade like becoming an electrician.”
The YWCA will host its annual Stand Down event on Thursday, November 6, providing veterans with access to medical services, employment resources, housing assistance, and community support. “It’s a resource fair,” Quinn said. “The VA medical team is there to provide appointments on-site. It’s also an opportunity for the community to come in and offer their resources… and for volunteers to just say thank you to our veterans.” Veterans attending are asked to provide proof of service, such as a DD-214, but the YWCA can assist those who may have lost theirs.
With over 100 veterans expected to receive direct services and hundreds of community members involved, Stand Down continues a longstanding tradition of reconnecting veterans with essential services and support.
