When La’Velle Howell noticed a lack of compassionate care options for her autistic son, she created Prodigy Spectrum Management, a personal care facility designed to feel like home rather than an institution. “The places that I toured seemed more institutionalized, and I didn’t want that for him. I wanted the place that felt like home, even when he wasn’t home,” Howell said.

Two years ago, Howell’s vision expanded beyond supporting her son when a former coworker from the Department of Veterans Affairs asked if she could provide housing for homeless veterans. “I was thinking, how do we have any veterans that are homeless? I had no clue that we had such a huge issue as we do now with homeless veterans,” Howell recalled. She opened her facility to a small number of veterans, and the stories she heard changed her life.

Prodigy now offers housing for veterans for up to two years, alongside a wide range of personal care services including three meals a day, medical assistance, haircuts, and medication management. Residents also participate in activities such as yoga, horse therapy, bingo, and bowling. “It’s home. That’s the amazing part about Prodigy,” Howell said. “The social part of it is necessary… it promotes that kind of family environment, and a lot of them seek to reach back out to their family members.”

The organization has expanded through community support and partnerships, including financial assistance from FNATA to purchase multiple buildings, ensuring stability for the veterans. Howell emphasized the importance of dignity and respect in the program: “One of the things that I see when veterans come in, I want them to get their dignity and respect back and give back to themselves.”

With Prodigy Spectrum Management, Howell is providing a model of care that combines practical support with emotional healing, helping veterans rebuild their lives while fostering a strong sense of community.
