On October 4, 2025, a local Braver Angels debate brought community members together to discuss the resolution: “Immigrants in this country illegally should have a path to legalize their status.” The event offered a unique approach to civil discourse, emphasizing understanding over winning.

David Cattell, a retired educator and Braver Angels debate chair, guided the discussion. “Braver Angels creates an environment where people with vastly different perspectives can safely express deeply held beliefs,” Cattell said. “It promotes the lost art of civil discourse — something we desperately need in today’s polarized society.”

First-time participant Jason Langheine joined after hearing about Braver Angels on The Spark. “Debate is an opportunity to understand how other people think and see things from their perspective,” Langheine shared. “It also challenges you to apply critical thought to your own views in order to form a coherent argument.”

Braver Angels debates are designed to foster listening, reflection, and empathy. Unlike traditional debates, there are no winners — the goal is to bridge divides and encourage constructive conversation.
