A new passenger bridge at Lancaster’s Amtrak station is part of a five-year plan for improving the state’s railroads, which is available for public comment through Oct. 24.
The public can view the draft plan and get details on a virtual public meeting set for 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 16 by visiting lanc.news/RailPlan. Comments can be sent to RA-PDPASRP@pa.gov.
The state Department of Transportation is updating the plan to identify needed freight and passenger rail projects statewide. Those include $220 million in improvements to the Keystone Corridor to make way for a planned second daily train between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh via Lancaster, which is set to start running sometime next year.
Set to be completed sometime next year, the passenger bridge will connect a new parking lot off Keller Avenue, which is already completed, but temporarily closed while the bridge is constructed. When the $22 million project is completed, it will double the station’s previous parking capacity to more than 400 spaces. Lancaster station served 464,190 passengers in 2024, making it the state’s second-busiest Amtrak station behind Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station.
