Washington Crossing Historic Park, located along the Delaware River, stands as a pivotal site in American history. It was here that George Washington famously crossed the Delaware on Christmas night in 1776, a daring maneuver that helped turn the tide of the Revolutionary War.

“Prior to the crossing, Washington is losing. He’s been pushed back out of New York into New Jersey,” said a park spokesperson. “He knows he needs a victory… if he doesn’t make this happen, the war is over. It is nothing short of victory or death, all or nothing. And thankfully, he was successful, and we have the independence that we do today.”

The park offers visitors a hands-on historical experience. Attractions include the Thompson Neely Farmstead, where the Continental Army encamped, and Bowman’s Tower, a 125-foot lookout commemorating the high ground Washington took. Guests can also explore the lower park village, including the Durham Boat Barn with full-size replicas, and a variety of 18th-century artifacts.

The park is maintained through a public-private partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and the Friends of Washington Crossing Park. “Our friends group does everything from large-scale fundraising events… to educational programs,” the spokesperson said. Each year, the park hosts around 10,000 school children and features commemorative events such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July Living History programs, and the annual crossing reenactment with 200–300 reenactors in period clothing.

Special community programs provide opportunities for hands-on learning and inclusivity. “Washington’s birthday… is really geared at a very young audience. Kids crafts, even a birthday cake with a cake cutting with Washington’s sword,” the spokesperson said. Spring programs, like sheep shearing, connect children to 18th-century civilian life. The park also hosts a Juneteenth program highlighting the contributions of Black soldiers to the Revolutionary War, with newly researched historical records giving names and stories to these often-overlooked heroes.

Through its combination of immersive historical sites, educational programming, and community events, Washington Crossing Historic Park allows visitors of all ages to connect deeply with the nation’s founding and the individuals who made it possible.
