Looking Back at Hurricane Katrina: How Meteorology Has Advanced in 20 Years

When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005, the storm left a devastating mark on New Orleans and surrounding communities. Nearly two decades later, the storm is remembered not only for its destruction, but also for how it reshaped meteorology and weather forecasting.

“I was actually in my first meteorology class as an undergraduate,” recalled Colin Zarzycki, Associate Professor of Meteorology and Climate Dynamics at Penn State. “Every one of our classes started with an update on where the storm was going.”

At the time, the National Hurricane Center’s website was the primary place for official forecasts. “Back then, most of following the storm was leveraging the National Hurricane Center’s website… and major news outlets,” Zarzycki said.

While Katrina was forecast with relative accuracy, the technology of the time had limitations. “When Katrina first crossed into the Gulf, we really didn’t know whether it was gonna be a landfall in Texas, whether it would be in the Panhandle of Florida,” Zarzycki explained. “Nowadays, what we knew about 48 hours before Katrina made landfall, we sometimes know five days in advance.”

That extra lead time, he said, can save lives. “Improved forecasts allow for meteorologists and emergency planners to issue evacuation orders possibly three or four days out,” Zarzycki noted.

Beyond forecasting models, Katrina also changed how meteorologists communicate with the public. “Katrina was kind of at the forefront of internet communications,” Zarzycki said. “It was one of those events that started to show meteorologists about using the internet to communicate risk and hazards.”

As smartphones and social media became mainstream in the years after Katrina, weather warnings became faster and more widely available. “The faster we can get warnings and other information out to people, the more time they have to evacuate or prepare,” Zarzycki emphasized.

Looking back, he says Katrina remains a watershed moment for meteorologists. “It really was a pretty important storm in how meteorologists communicate the risks and hazards associated with extreme weather,” he said.
