Field of candidates for general election likely to be set within next 2 weeks for Lancaster County

The field of candidates for the Nov. 4 general election is taking shape and will likely be set within the next two weeks.

Independent candidates who want to run for school board or a municipal office have until Friday to complete their nomination papers and file them with the Lancaster County elections office.

Friday is also the deadline for winning write-in candidates from the May 20 primary to accept their nominations, according to county spokesman Michael Fitzpatrick.

Partisan candidates who won a spot on the Democratic and Republican tickets in the primary have until Aug. 11 to withdraw from the race.

Currently, 13 of the county’s 17 school districts will see contested school board races, and partisan control of municipal government is up for grabs in East Hempfield and Manheim Township.

Mayoral seats are at stake in Lancaster city and several county boroughs. At the state level, the Commonwealth Court and Superior Court each need to fill an open seat, and three state Supreme Court justices are up for retention this year.

The last day to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 20.

For more election information, visit the county election office at 150 N. Queen St., Suite 117, in Lancaster, or call 717-299-8293.
