In time for America’s 250th birthday celebration in 2026, AmeriStarRail is proposing a bold new vision to revolutionize cross-country transportation: the Transcontinental Chief, a privately funded, coast-to-coast train designed to carry passengers, personal vehicles, and even full tractor-trailers—all in under 72 hours.

The project aims to team with Amtrak while staying independent of federal funding. “We thought, hey, this is gonna be a great birthday present for America,” said Scott Spencer, President and CEO of AmeriStarRail. “Let’s step in and show America what the private sector—what the free enterprise initiative—can do to turn Amtrak’s money-losing trains into making a profit.

Though AmeriStarRail is a private company, it will operate the Transcontinental Chief under Amtrak branding and ticketing, using Amtrak union crews and relying on Amtrak’s congressional authority to access freight railroads.

“AmeriStarRail is focused with a business model of just the cost above the rail,” Spencer explained. “We take responsibility for the train crews, locomotives, the train cars, administration, marketing… but the trains will still be branded, marketed, and ticketed as Amtrak.”

Amtrak will also play a key role in coordinating with host railroads like Norfolk Southern and BNSF, which own most of the route. AmeriStarRail, Spencer said, brings “innovation in terms of how to run this service in ways [Amtrak] hadn’t thought of.”

The Transcontinental Chief could begin operation as soon as National Train Day, May 10, 2026, aligning with both America 250 celebrations and the FIFA World Cup in the U.S. Spencer believes it’s not only an efficient transport solution but also a powerful symbol.

“We want this train to be a rolling example of American ingenuity,” he said. “It’s time to show what rail can be—not just for passengers, but for freight, tourism, and our economy.”

If successful, the Transcontinental Chief could mark a turning point in American rail, blending historical celebration with a futuristic model of sustainable, efficient, and privately funded transportation.
