Pa. families may receive up to $120 in food benefits per child through SUN Bucks

Eligible families have until Aug. 31 to apply for up to $120 in summer food benefits per child.

The federally funded SUN Bucks program helps low-income families buy food for their children while school is out for the summer. The program provides a one-time payment of $40 per summer month per eligible child, with a maximum of $120 per child. The SNAP-like benefit can be used to purchase groceries.

Pennsylvania has opted into the SUN Bucks program for a second year in a row.

While most eligible children will be enrolled automatically without an application, some households, depending on the circumstances, will need to apply. The deadline is Aug. 31, and applications received after that date will be considered for next summer.

Children may be automatically eligible if they or their families qualify for SNAP or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, if they qualify for Medicaid with qualifying income for the National School Lunch Program or if they applied for and were eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.

Families can determine if their children are automatically eligible at lanc.news/sunbucks.

Children who are not automatically eligible include those at schools where all students receive free or reduced-price meals, if their families do not meet other automatic eligibility criteria. In these cases, families will need to submit an application, which can be done at a local County Assistance Office, by mail or online at lanc.news/SUNapply.

Most benefits will be issued beginning in late July, with all to be issued by the end of September.
