The Senate Has Voted to Eliminate Public Media Funding

The Senate has passed the Recissions Act of 2025, which would completely defund public media. The amended bill now heads back to the House for consideration.

This vote threatens federal support for WITF — putting at risk the educational programs, trusted news and emergency communications our community relies on, both locally and from PBS and NPR.

Your voice is urgently needed. Call your Representative and donate today to help protect the future of local public media.

The Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals will meet in a preseason game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Hershey’s Giant Center, the Hershey Bears and Capitals announced Thursday.

Tickets will go on sale to the public on Friday, July 18, at 10 a.m. at HersheyEntertainment.com and Ticketmaster.com. Bears and Caps season-ticket holders will be informed via email about an exclusive presale.

The Bears are the AHL affiliate of the Capitals.

“We’re excited to bring our team to Hershey for this preseason matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers,” said Washington senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick in a press release. “Hershey has a rich hockey tradition and we are proud to be a part of that legacy through our longstanding and successful partnership with our AHL affiliate. The affiliation between our two organizations has been essential in developing our players, instilling our organizational values, and building a strong connection with the local community. We look forward to the chance to engage with the passionate and loyal fans who make Hershey such a special place for hockey.”

Hershey has won the Calder Cup as the AHL champions five times since becoming affiliated with Washington for the 2005-06 season, including back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024.

Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery was Hershey’s head coach from 2018-21.

This will be the fourth time an NHL preseason game will be held at Giant Center and the first since 2006.

The Flyers played the New York Islanders in 2003, the Capitals met the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005, and the Caps faced the New Jersey Devils in 2006.

“We are proud of our partnership with the Washington Capitals and we look forward to welcoming them and the Philadelphia Flyers to Giant Center in September,” said Hershey vice president of hockey operations Bryan Helmer in the release. “Hershey is a historic hockey market that has played a large role in the careers of many NHL players over the years. We are excited to showcase NHL action to our dedicated fans who are the best in the American Hockey League and are sure to provide a great atmosphere for this marquee showcase.”
