Spring is officially here, and with it comes unpredictable weather patterns that keep residents on their toes. On the Spark, we spoke ABC27 meteorologist Dan Tomaso about the recent and upcoming weather pattens.

“Now that we’re out of winter officially and into spring, it really has been a pretty nice March,” Tomaso noted. “March has this reputation of being a pretty brutally cold month, but we’ve actually been in the top five or at least the top ten for warmth for the month.”

Despite the warmer temperatures, Tomaso pointed out that March has been exceptionally dry. “Since the end of winter, it’s been very, very dry, which is leading to some of these warm sunny days,” he explained. However, the lack of precipitation is a growing concern as it may impact drought conditions moving into the summer months.

Many were surprised to see snowflakes in late March, despite the arrival of spring. Tomaso shared how this happens. “Even when ground temperatures are above freezing, the air above us can be much colder, allowing snowflakes to form and reach the ground before melting.”

He also explained that while flurries can happen, measurable snow in April is quite rare. “Accumulating snow this late in the season is not typical,” he added, though he recalled a cold spell in May 2020 that brought minor accumulations.

Looking ahead, Tomaso highlighted an upcoming dramatic temperature shift. “This weekend, we could see temperatures swing from the mid-50s to near 80 degrees,” he said. “Saturday looks mainly dry, and that’s why we have a shot at not only being in the 70s but possibly close to 80 degrees.”

However, Sunday and Monday bring the possibility of clouds and showers, with potential thunderstorms making timing uncertain. LIBeyond the weekend, Tomaso predicted a cooling trend. “It’ll drop back closer to normal—mid-50s by mid-next week—but that’s right on par with early April,” he explained. “Then, some models show we could shoot back up to 70 or 80 degrees by the end of next weekend. These swings are part of the transition into the warmer season.”
