Aired; March 25th, 2025.

Pretty soon in Lancaster County, British actor and playwright Michael Mears will showcase his latest play, The Mistake, on April 15-16. The play arrives during the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Nearly 20 years ago, Mears read a newspaper article that shared the experiences of the pilot who dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, and a survivor of the attack. That tiny newspaper article sparked his curiosity. “What if the pilot and a survivor met face-to-face?”

During the interview, Mears shared that although the mistake takes you back in time 80 years ago during the time of the attack, the message is more relevant than ever.

“Every year since I wrote the play, it somehow feels more urgent,” Mears says. “When we booked the venue for its 2022 premiere, the very next day, Russia invaded Ukraine, and Vladimir Putin started making nuclear threats. The play became even more critical as a conversation starter.”

The play is a two-person production featuring Mears and a talented Japanese performer based in Lindon. Mears says this approach allows for an immersive storytelling experience that shares the personal and emotional aspects of history.

“It’s just two people with a few simple objects telling a story,” Mears explains. “But it’s a powerful way to engage audiences and remind them of the real human impact of war.”
