Extreme temperatures and loud booming sounds can have big impacts on our pets. Amanda Brunish, the Director of Marketing and Outreach for the Humane Society of Harrisburg joined The Spark on Friday to offer safety tips for pets during the summer months.
Many pets show signs of anxiety due to fireworks and loud noises such as thunderstorms. However, Brunish says there’s a couple of things that could be done to lessen the stress for your pets.
“Specifically for the 4th of July and around that time of year when you know what’s going to happen. You know, you can do a couple of things. One thing is make sure that you kind of have a safe haven area for your dog or your cat that makes them feel secure. Some dogs really like to have a kennel that has like a blanket that they love. When the fireworks are going off, play light noises that could be your TV, playing your TV and little louder than normal, that can help it as well. If it’s very severe, you can get medication.”
Brunish even said a lot of pets go missing during the Fourth of July weekend, and it is important to have them microchipped. In addition to the loud noises, the heat can also be dangerous for pets.
“If you see an animal drooling or panting, showing those signs of anxiety or relentlessness or vomiting.. those are signs of heatstroke. And then you want to get into a situation where you’re putting them in the cold, bring them inside, giving them cool water, and then you want to call your veterinarian always.”
