On July 3rd, 1863 – 160 years ago – the Battle of Gettysburg ended with a Union victory that is widely believed to be the turning point of the Civil War.

Ten years ago, Gettysburg commemorated the 150th anniversary of the battle.

WITF broadcast from Gettysburg all three days of the battle’s anniversary – July 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

On The Spark Monday, we had an encore of parts of those broadcasts – describing what happened during those three days and a few other stories as well.

Ben Neely was the Executive director of the Adams County Historical Society at the time and led us through the actions of the three days of the battle.

Nancy Gudmestad is one of the owners of the Shriver House in Gettysburg and told the story of a family that tried to escape the violence but instead walked right into it.

And renowned historian and author Doris Kearns Goodwin talked with us about the history and the battle.
