Guitarist Manuel Barrueco plays Albeniz in the Royal Alcazar of Seville in GREAT PERFORMANCES "NOW HEAR THIS: Albéniz: Portraits of Spain."
Travel with host, violinist, and conductor Scott Yoo in Great Performances: Now Hear This, as he shines a spotlight on the collaborative processes and creative inspiration behind the work of flamenco’s Isaac Albéniz.
Discover the inspiration Spain provided composer Isaac Albéniz with guitarist Manuel Barrueco and pianist Juan Pérez Floristán through an exploration of the country’s “portraits,” including the nearby sea and its Moorish culture.
With Yoo, we’ll explore the creation of the guitar with guitar-makers in Granada, test the acoustics of a bañuelo (an ancient Moorish bath), and more, while the three musicians spotlight the cultural exchange of the Mediterranean region.
They’ll visit notable sites throughout Spain including the Moorish palace the Alambra, which is famed for its architecture and design. They’ll be led by several local historians, musicians, and a chef.
Watch Great Performances: Now Hear This: Albéniz: Portraits of Spain on WITF TV Friday, April 28 at 9pm, or stream the special on demand for free until May 27 using the PBS or WITF app.
