Jeffrey Gabel, the founding executive director of Gettysburg College’s Majestic Theater, plans to retire January 2024 after twenty years of service and nearly forty years in the entertainment business.

He programmed more than three hundred concerts by professional artists, helped lead an almost $17 million renovation for Majestic Theater, produced the Ken Burns Festival in Gettysburg last month, which drew sold out audiences from across the country, and more.

Gabel, joined us on The Spark Tuesday to tell us about his story, career and its impact.

Gabel said, as a kid he was known for making faces and making people laugh. That was the start of a long career in show business, where he got his start by working as a circus clown. Gabel also gained experience as an actor and in public television as a host, producer, writer, fundraiser and station manager. Gabel said, all of these roles served him in his position with Majestic Theater.

“I get up every morning and I’m raring and ready to go into the theater because something interesting and creative is always going on,” Gabel said. “It’s always bringing joy to the world, discussion to contemporary ideas or solace to the world, to the children and everyone who’s young at heart.”

Although Gabel enjoyed his career at Majestic Theater he said, he’s looking forward to spending his retirement as an audience member, who can enjoy the magic of theater that he was once helped support and create.
