Hundreds of organizations and agencies in the U.S. are raising money to provide aid — especially humanitarian aid — to Ukraine, a month after the Russian invasion. But what’s not quite as common is a fundraiser that has a direct tie to Ukraine.

Along with the music, that’s what makes the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra‘s April 8 and 9 concerts special.

The central work on the program is Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony, in which the composer sought to honor Ukraine, quoting numerous Ukrainian folk songs and melodies. Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony is part of ironic music history — one that takes on more significance with war being waged in Ukraine. A critic gave the symphony the nickname of the “Little Russian.” LSO has re-titled the program “The Ukrainian.”

Lancaster Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Guy McIntosh appears on Tuesday’s Smart Talk to discuss the concerts and fundraising for Ukraine.
