WITF Transforming Health reporter, Brett Sholtis, appearing on Smart Talk, September 13, 2019.

Hey everybody! I’m Brett Sholtis. Since 2017 I have been covering health issues that matter to Pennsylvanians as WITF’s Transforming Health reporter.

WITF’s mission is to serve and connect the communities in our broadcast area. We are always looking for new ways to do that — and to that end, I’m inviting you to sign up for my text club through a service called Subtext. You can join at joinsubtext.com/health.

It’s free to sign up, and it’s a direct, two-way connection to me as I cover pressing health topics such as the nurse staffing shortage, a big opioid lawsuit settlement that is bringing money to communities and the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. This effort is part of America Amplified, a national project among public media organizations based on listening, community engagement and reflecting America.

This year I’m also proud to work as a Rosalynn Carter fellow focused on mental health journalism. It’s something I’m really passionate about, and I’m eager to meet others whose lives have been affected by mental health issues.

About once a week, I’ll share stories I’ve recently published, as well as some info on stories I’m currently working on.

With my text club, you can actually help inform my work before it’s written – whether you want to point me to an expert source, or you want to share your own experience. And it’s private, too, so we don’t have to worry about Twitter trolls or Facebook “friends” butting in.

I’m really looking forward to hearing from you!
