(York) – The city of York is getting $10 million in state support for a greenway project.
The money is intended to help improve water quality and increase public access to the Codorus Creek.
Plans for the Codorus Greenway Project call for the creation of a 1.4-mile recreational area to connect businesses, schools and the York Heritage Rail Trail.
Gov. Tom Wolf, a resident of York County, said the space will be a place people can come to gather and relax.
“This is a bold re-imagining that will take an inaccessible, unusable area and turn it into a green hub for the York city residents and visitors with immense potential to support further community and economic development. This will be a magnet,” he said.

The first phase of construction, which is expected to begin next year, includes pedestrian walkways on the levee system and a fishing platform.
Developers also plan to relocate deteriorating flood walls and built an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant.
“People love to congregate by water, and outdoor spaces are essential to a community’s health, vitality, pride, and economy,” said Kevin Schreiber, CEO of the York County Economic Alliance.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is also investing $16 million in a flood wall and other infrastructure improvements to support flood protection.
Total investment in the project is expected reach around $150 million – and will include state and federal dollars, as well as private funders.
