Congratulations to Viseth Meng, the winner of WITF’s Central PA Spelling Bee for the second year in a row! The 2021 bee was completely virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic. Although the competition was different, the spellers rose to the occasion. After 19 rounds, Viseth won with the correct spelling of the word “effluent.”
Viseth is an eighth-grade student at Cedar Crest Middle School in the Cornwall-Lebanon School District. This was Viseth’s fourth time participating in the Central PA Spelling Bee and his second win! In 2020, Viseth won the bee with the correct spelling of the word “tapetum.” He was supposed to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington D.C., but the bee was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year the Scripps National Spelling Bee will include three virtual rounds. The top 10-12 spellers will move on to the finals which will be in-person in Orlando, FL.
“I feel amazing,” said Viseth. “The best bee of my career you could say!”
Congratulations to Viseth and good luck in the national bee!
And congratulations to all 32 spellers who competed in the WITF Central PA Spelling Bee! What an accomplishment!
Watch the WITF Central PA Spelling Bee repeat broadcasts on Friday, March 12 at 3pm and Sunday, March 14 at 8am. The program is also available to stream on-demand or through the PBS Video app.
