People who have a license to carry a firearm now have an extension on the expiration date of their permits because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release Wednesday that permits set to expire March 19 or later will be valid until May 30. State police said the extension is because some county courthouses and sheriff’s offices are closed, and because of other “protective measures” being taken to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Pennsylvanians who are 21 years old or older can apply for a permit to carry firearms to the county sheriff where they live, or, if they live in Philadelphia, to the chief of police. When granted, a license is valid for five years.

A license to carry firearms is required for a person to carry a concealed firearm. It’s a third-degree felony to concealed carry without a permit.
