U.S. Census director makes a stop in State College to encourage participation

U.S. Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham visited State College to meet with local government and university officials.
(State College) — U.S. Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham visited State College Wednesday to talk about efforts to get people to take part in the count.
He is visiting dozens of universities and met with Penn State president Eric Barron before visiting nearby census headquarters to talk with local government officials.
Dillingham said they are still hiring census takers and that the coronavirus won’t stop canvassing.
“One of the good things about the census is there are different ways to answer the census this year,” Dillingham said. “It can be on the internet. It can be by phone. Or it can be by paper.”

The U.S. Census Bureau is trying to encourage most households to get counted for the 2020 census by filling out an online form on their smartphones, tablets or personal computers.
The State College Area Complete Count Committee is promoting the census with banners, post cards and educational outreach. Kevin Kassab is director of the office of community engagement for the borough of State College.
He said there will be five or six locations in the area where people can go for help.
“And we will advertise these locations to the community to stop by if they have questions about census, if they need help filling out census forms,” Dillingham said.
Invitations to complete the census will be sent out in mid-March. People should fill it out with where they live on April 1, which is Census Day.
