(York) — A man who was kicked out of a Pennsylvania bar after reported racial remarks to a black patron, then shot and killed a friend of the patron who went outside to talk to him, has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.
Twenty-five-year-old James Saylor of Lower Windsor Township was convicted in September of first-degree murder, harassment, ethnic intimidation and related crimes in the July 2018 death of Chad Merrill.
Saylor testified during his York County trial that he had been drinking for hours and didn’t remember the shooting outside the Red Rose Restaurant and Lounge in Hellam Township. The defense argued that he was too drunk to have intended the slaying, but jurors took less than an hour to convict. His attorney has vowed to appeal.
