(Iowa City) — Penn State’s Noah Cain scored on a five-yard touchdown run with 5:17 to play, ensuring the 10th-ranked Nittany Lions win over No. 17 Iowa 17-12 Saturday night. It makes their first win over a ranked opponent this season
Cain finished the game with 102 yards on the ground for PSU (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten), who extended their winning streak over the Hawkeyes (4-2, 1-2) to six games.
The turning point in the matchup of two of the nation’s top defenses came when Iowa’s Nate Stanley was picked off by safety Jaquan Brisker with 9:22 remaining. The Penn State offense then drove 35 yards, capped by three straight runs by Cain to make it 17-6.
Iowa didn’t give up, however, closing to 17-12 when Stanley found Brandon Smith for a 33-yard TD pass with 2:31 to go. A two-point conversion failed for the Hawkeyes and the Penn State offense made sure Iowa would not see the ball again.
KJ Hamler caught seven passes, including a 22-yarder for a touchdown for Penn State.
The Nittany Lions return to Beaver Stadium on Saturday to host Michigan.
