(Harrisburg) — A police-involved shooting snarled traffic on a major midstate highway for several hours on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

Trooper Megan Frazer with the Pennsylvania State Police said a trooper was traveling north on I-83 around 10:30 a.m. Friday morning when he noticed a vehicle aggressively tailgating him.

“He then drove in front of the state trooper and abruptly stopped, which initiated a traffic stop,” Frazer said. “The driver of the vehicle immediately got out of his vehicle, armed with a machete.”

Frazer said the trooper fired at the suspect, after he failed to obey commands to stop moving toward the trooper.

The suspect was shot multiple times and taken to Hershey Medical Center. Frazer said his injuries are suspected to be non-life threatening.

The trooper wasn’t injured.

The Dauphin County District Attorney’s office is investigating.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the trooper and suspect.
