New law provides help for state and local police
(Harrisburg) — Governor Tom Wolf has signed a bill involving law enforcement officers who are not part of a municipal police department.
The measure gives non-municipal officers, such as members of a college campus police force, the authority to go beyond their jurisdictional boundaries in support of local or state police.
State Senator John Rafferty said an example of where these officers would be allowed to act would be if they walk into a gas station and witness a hold-up they would be able to become involved and apprehend the individual.
Other situations include pursuing a criminal suspect or helping to execute a court order.
Prior to House and Senate approval, the bill was amended to include agents in the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office.
