(Harrisburg) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says they’re ready for anything old man winter dishes out.

PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards says preparation for winter operations began at the end of last season and they are ready to go.

She says the plow crews take on a huge responsibility.

“Not only do they have to be out there performing very tough maneuvers with the plows, with the blades going up and down, they have to look around and help motorists that may have trouble,.. and so they really need to be at the top of their game and very aware with no distractions,” Richards said.

The department has provided answers to frequently asked questions by the public at its website, penndot-dot-gov.

Richards also reminds motorists to  take advantage of the state’s 511 system for up-to-date travel information, at 511-pa-dot-com.

PennDOT is responsible for approximately 40-thousand miles of Pennsylvania highways and nearly 25-thousand bridges.
