Franklin and Marshall president to lead D.C.-based Aspen Institute

(Washington D.C.) — The president of Franklin and Marshall College is stepping down.
Dan Porterfield has been named the president and CEO of the Aspen Institute.
The organization bills itself as a nonpartisan forum for values-based leadership and the exchange of ideas.
In a statement on the institute’s website, Board of Trustees Chairman James Schine Crown detailed the hiring process and why Porterfield stood out among the candidates:
We selected Dan to lead the Aspen Institute because his career reflects lifelong impact in values-based leadership and a commitment to the open exchange of ideas – those pillars of our mission that have withstood the test of time and are poised to carry us into the future. When we began this process, we stated publicly that we were looking for a leader who could embrace our mission; elevate others; be an agent of change; preserve integrity; build bridges; reach more Americans; expect excellence; and exhibit joy. We have found the candidate who fulfills all of those criteria in Dan Porterfield.
Porterfield has led F&M in Lancaster since 2011.
Under his leadership, the libreral arts college set school records for applications, fundraising, and fellowships — among other achievements.
Porterfield will succeed Walter Isaacson, effective June first.
