What to look for on Smart Talk THursday, October 26, 2017:

The program 1A — produced in Washington and distributed nationally by NPR — follows Smart Talk on WITF every Monday through Friday.

Hosted by veteran broadcast journalist Joshua Johnson, 1A brings a fresh look to the issues and the stories that are making news.

From the program website: “Launched at a tumultuous time for news and inspired by the 1st Amendment, Joshua Johnson and 1A bring new insight and inquiry to the most pressing issues of our time.”

“My professional passions have always centered on creativity, exploration and service,” Joshua notes. “This moment in history demands these attributes of us. It’s a chance to tell stories more creatively, to explore ideas beyond our own, and to refocus on serving others.”

Along the way, 1A and Johnson promote the public media ideals of civil and thoughtful discourse.

1A host Joshua Johnson appears on Thursday’s Smart Talk to to discuss those ideals and the program.

Also, JD Evolution 2017 is an annual conference presented by business leader and consultant John Dame.  Its scheduled for next Tuesday in Harrisburg.  Evolution ’17 is a gathering of business leaders interested in exploring and developing a template for implementing purpose-driven leadership.

On Thursday’s Smart Talk, we’ll discuss leadership with an emphasis on business with John Dame business leader and consultant and global business leader and inspirational speaker Brett Pyle, who will speak at the conference on Your Extraordinary Why: Living a Successful Life of Significance.

– I would like to say welcome to Central PA, I genuinely hope that you have an enjoyable time. I also hope that you get a chance to take in some of the local culture and faire.

How does it feel to be in Trump country? This is a legitimate question! When friends visit here and see MAGA hats and Trump flags, they walk around like they know something that everyone else doesn’t. Do you empathize?    -Tom

– Please ask if 1A checks for responses/questions in an email inbox during their show or if they only check their voicemail. The host of the show has stressed that the show is a radio show and therefore the show prefers audio to play on the air, however, not everyone can call in during that hour of the day.                                         – anon

– I’m a big fan of 1-A due to the candor and investigative nature of the presentation of topical subjects and news.

Is there any pushback from “mainstream” media ownership to shows such as 1-A?

Joshua Johnson is in the same league as Glenn Greenwald in challenging what has become the status quo of modern journalism.

Keep up the great work, Joshua.  Our country needs more journalists like you!        – Donna, Newville

– Thanks for having Joshua Johnson on your show today. 1A is my favorite radio show. I appreciate the intelligent discourse in an age where often “hot” subjects cause communication break down and hostile responses.  – Tammy

– I really love 1A. I listen to it daily and would just like to say how much I appreciate how Joshua Johnson challenges his guests. One of the problems with a variety of different media forms today is that someone can say something completely erroneous and get away with it. I don’t expect every host to know all the facts about every issue…but it is good to hear him question and challenge information asserted both as fact and opinion. Yes – you have the right to your informed opinion but it should be based on fact and reality. Thank you.                                           – Nicole, Herndon PA

– Nice to hear from Joshua Johnson.  1-A is very good.  That said, while we all have distinct personalities, I wish that Mr. Johnson would tone down his delivery–too much loud emphasis, sudden elevation of voice octave, etcetera.  It makes me very nervous and interferes with my processing of the show.  I posit Robert Costa as a great example of very good on-air presence.                                            – Sharon, Hanover

– Congratulations Joshua ! You are the most responsible,  measured journalist on the air – tv and radio – you don’t get lost in sex,  lies and video tape, you keep the conversation mature and civil, you call people on their misdirects and your subjects are important to our future. I am so glad to have you to listen to every day.  – Susan
