(Harrisburg)– Pennsylvania is expected to have a spectacular display of foliage this fall.

Ryan Reed of the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources predicts it will peak a little earlier than usual this year.

“One thing I have noticed is in the last month or so, we’ve had cooler than usual temperatures and that has seemed to accelerate the change,” he says.

The peak color should arrive in Pennsylvania’s northern tier by the end of September, according to Reed. It will peak in the central part of the state by early October, and then mid-October for the southern region.

He says the weather conditions are right for trees to show off their rich colors.

“Good rainfall, nice cool nights. Sunny days seems to be a common denominator, warm but not hot–nothing drought-y. Those are the conditions that will lead up to an excellent fall foliage season.”

Eastern North America is one of only three regions of the world where deciduous forests display such intense autumn colors.

Starting September 21st, DCNR will have weekly fall foliage reports posted on its website.
