(Harrisburg) — A drought watch is now in effect in 30 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, with a drought warning issued for another four.

The watches and warnings were issued by the Department of Environmental Protection.

Spokesperson Deborah Klenotic says the data the DEP receives comes from the Commonwealth Drought Task Force.

“Persisting dry conditions in middle and eastern areas of the state have deepened precipitation deficits.  The result is extemely low ground water and stream flow, especially in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas in the Delaware River Basin,” she said.

Those under a drought watch are asked to voluntarily cut back non-essential water use by 5 percent, while those in the warning area, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton Counties, are asked for a 10 to 15 percent reduction.
