Republican will run against Bill Shuster — on Democratic line

(Harrisburg) — A Republican who lost his primary contest for a midstate congressional seat in April says he now plans to run on the Democratic Party line in November’s general election.

Art Halvorson says he feels like he has to run against Congressman Bill Shuster again.

“There’s a moral imperative here I believe. We’re losing our country. And so even if I had doubts about whether I should do this, could we pull it off on the Democratic side, we looked to wise counsel, we looked to people who understood these things,” says Halvorson.

So Halvorson, who narrowly lost to Shuster in April’s Republican primary, will be listed as a Democrat on the ballot for the 9th congressional district, which includes Franklin County and part of Huntington in the midstate.

Write-in votes by Democrats in that party’s primary gave him that option.

Halvorson says he’s not changing any of his policy positions, and will caucus with Republicans if he wins in November.

“I’m not misrepresenting myself to anyone. I’m making it very clear who I am. I’m the same guy who the Republicans almost gave me a victory in the primary,” he adds.

Congressman Bill Shuster’s campaign didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The general election is November 8th.
