(Carlisle) — A midstate borough may soon add legal protections for people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.

First, the proposal will get a look from Carlisle borough’s lawyer, and a public meeting may be held later this month.

The ordinance would bar discrimination of LGBT people, and would create a human relations commission to handle any complaints.

If it were approved, Carlisle would join Harrisburg, York and Lancaster, which all have similar laws.

Governor Tom Wolf also issued executive orders prohibiting discrimination against LGBT state workers, or those who work for state contractors.

Carlisle Borough Councilmember Sean Crampsie says the proposal first popped up six years ago, but he says there’s no reason to wait.

“It wasn’t spurred by any situation. I believe it’s the right thing to do. I think Carlisle can really show some leadership with our borough in taking the right steps in eliminating discrimination,” says Crampsie.

“I would say it’s time to do this. I can tell you council has been getting a a flood of emails. There’s been some opposed to the ordinance, but we’ve also been getting, and I’ve been surprised at, the outpouring of support.”

A full borough council vote could come in the fall.
