Rebate program for some hybrid vehicles extended

(Harrisburg) — Those willing to take a chance on some new technology in cars will have more time to take advantage of state incentives.

The state Department of Environmental Protection is extending the latest round of its Alternative Fuel Vehicle Rebate program, which offers up to $2,000 toward the purchase of a plug-in or battery powered hybrid.

The program also offers smaller rebates for hydrogen fuel cell or natural gas powered vehicles.

Lynda Rebarchak, spokesperson for the state D.E.P, says it’s moved past rebates for cars like the Toyota Prius, a common gas-electric hybrid.

“Folks really don’t need an incentive to purchase them, that technology has caught on and seems to be doing well on its own. We try to adjust the program to have it make sense, where the incentives are needed.”

Electric vehicles from Tesla, the Chevrolet Volt, and the Nissan Leaf are among those eligible for the rebates.

The buyer must submit an application for a rebate, and the vehicle must be registered and driven primarily in Pennsylvania.
