SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE:
The Underground Railroad In Northeast PA

Itinerary

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD MOTORCOACH TOUR
Since 1996, the mission of the center for anti-slavery studies, better known as CASS, has been to make the history of the abolition and underground railroad accessible to the general public. Visitors can hop on aboard a motorcoach for a tour to learn about this region’s role in anti-slavery movements. The tour is not a story of flight but of building a life and creating community.

SAINT PETER’S CATHEDRAL
Built in 1867, as the parish church of St. Vincent de Paul, Saint Peter’s Cathedral in downtown Scranton is shining example of Romanesque architecture. Visit these sacred halls and stand in awe of exquisite marble and stained glass . Those with “pipedreams” might want to check out the Cathedral’s unique pipe organ…it’s impressive to see…and hear!

LACKAWANNA STATE PARK
Just 10 miles north of Scranton, Lackwanna State Park is located in the heart of the Lackwanna Valley. The park, and its centerpiece Lackawanna Lake, is a popular spot for year-round activities through the state’s “Get Outdoors” program.

PA ANTHRACITE HERITAGE MUSEUM
Discover the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum in Scranton. Here you’ll meet the hardworking men and women who worked in the area’s mining and textiles industries. From the first arrivals, to present day immigrants, the museum tells the story of life and work in Northeast PA.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD QUILT CODE
The Center for Anti Slavery Studies (CASS) sews together the region’s Quest for Freedom through lectures, workshops and classes. The center is preserving the African-American quilt tradition while at the same time unlocking the truth behind the “Underground Railroad Quilt Code”.
