SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE:
The Underground Railroad In Northeast PA

For enslaved Africans in abolitionist America, the Northeast region of Pennsylvania was not just destination for freedom, it was a place to call home.

Meet Kimberly, Karen and Grace, three friends from Philadelphia. Their love of art and culture is matched only by their sense of adventure! We sent them on a trip that exposes them to PA’s Spirit of Independence plus teaches them about the state’s Underground Railroad history.

Starting at the beautiful Lackawanna Station Hotel, the travelers set out to discover the rich history of enslaved Africans and abolitionists as they tour historic sites in Waverly and Montrose. And to satisfy their appetite for adventure, the ladies experience a true Northeast PA tradition: Ice-Fishing! But don’t worry, they also get to enjoy a relaxing spa visit to round out the trip.

For more information on Northeast Pennsylvania check out the Lackawanna County Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Center for Anti-Slavery Studies, and the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority
