During the age of steam, the Pennsylvania Railroad relied on the workers of Altoona to design, build, test, operate and repair just about everything it needed keep the railroad on track. The Railroaders Memorial Museum celebrates the people who helped make Altoona the largest rail shop in the world.
HORSESHOE CURVE, Altoona
Witness a modern marvel of engineering at The Horseshoe Curve! Constructed entirely with picks, shovels, and horses, this groundbreaking achievement opened to rail traffic in 1854.
CANOE CREEK STATE PARK, Hollidaysburg
While you’re exploring Altoona’s railroads, take a small side trip and discover the great outdoors at Canoe Creek State Park! While the park offers lots of opportunities to swim, fish, hike, and relax, Canoe Creek’s biggest attraction is its bats…40,000 bats to be exact! It’s one of the largest bat colonies in the Eastern U.S.

BOYER CANDY COMPANY, INC., Altoona
Invented in Mama Boyer's Altoona kitchen in the early 1930's by her two sons Bill and Bob, the Mallo Cup was the first candy created in cup form.
ALTO MODEL TRAIN MUSEUM ASSOCIATION, INC., Altoona Miniature trains have been around since the end of the 19 th century. Today they’re not just toys but collector's items that are often worth lots of money. Established in 2000, the Alto Model Train Museum Association introduces the model train hobby to the young and young-at-heart.
ALLEGHENY PORTAGE RR NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE, Gallitzin
12 miles west of Altoona in the town of Gallitzin, you’ll discover The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site. Operating between 1834-1854, it was the fastest way to travel through the rough and wild terrain of Western Pennsylvania.
