Monday deadline for voter registration

The deadline to register to vote in the November election is October 5.

Stragglers can still sign up by going online. This marks the first year that eligible voters can register via the web, as long as PennDOT has a record of the applicant's signature.

"But if you don't have a signature on file with PennDOT, please keep in mind that your signature has to be postmarked by Monday," said Marian Schneider, deputy secretary for elections and administration at the Pennsylvania Department of State.

The Wolf administration began allowing online voter registration in late August. Since then, more than 21,000 people have used the system, either to submit new applications or change their existing voter information.

The Department of State couldn't say how those figures compare to registration numbers in similar past election years when online registration was not an option.

"We are committed to ensuring that all eligible voters come out and vote and the first step of that is registration," said Schneider. "We want to make registering as easy as possible."
