Joanna Ye, an eighth-grader at Lamberton Middle School in Carlisle, has correctly spelled the words "brachygraphy," "pinetum," "rocaille" and "hypotrichosis" in the semifinal round of the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
She will now advance with 13 other competitors to the finals, which are scheduled to air live on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. tonight.
Joanna isn't the only Pennsylvania speller to advance in the competition. Pennsylvania is the only state in the nation to have 4 spellers among the semifinalists. They include David Krak, of Litiz, Anahita Iyer, of Doylestown, and Sukanya Roy, of South Abington Township.
The winner will receive more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.
