I would like to thank Mitzi for all of her dedicated work. My wife and I were on the Wolftrap trip last year and someone on the bus had a great description of her which was meant in the kindest way: "The voice that makes you want to send money just to get her off the air" ;-)

Anyway, I often listen to various Public Radio stations on the internet and ran across "Say's You" and loved it. It would be great to see this on WITF Radio.

Please make Radio Smart Talk available for on-demand listening on the NPR app for smart phones.

Also...I love the Diane Rehm show. Please, consider adding that to the mix.

I listen all the time to WITF and love most of your programs. Thank You !
The only thing I don't like is CLASSICAL AIR during the week. I don't listen to WITF from 10AM to 3PM , The music you play during that time is jarring to my ears. Why can't we have more news, especially BBC news during the daytime ??

Craig, I am a huge fan of you and Radio Smart Talk - it's a great show! I'm new to the area within the last year and not only have I really enjoyed the show, but it's helped me learn more about the area in terms of local issues.

Question: I grew up in the DC area and my family listened to the local NPR station there - I remember listening to Beatle Brunch on Sundays when I was young. Does that program still air? I miss it! Thank you!

Whatever happened to the great jazz programming we used to hear? This genre has virtually vanished off your air waves although New Age music is well represented. The only jazz programming we hear now is out of Philadelphia or D.C., and since we usually can’t get either station on a regular basis,
we have been streaming a program from Seattle. This should not be necessary given the quality we have come to expect from our “hometown station.”

I would prefer more news/talk vs. music.

Could the Audio of WITF TV programs be broadcast over WITF FM? Some TV programs are nearly as enjoyable and informative without the pictures.

Wider variety in music programming. My preference is Latin, Jazz, and Show Tunes, but all types of music not heard on commercial radio would be appreciated in addition to your classical music programming.

WITF TV: ‘Dancing With the Stars’ has been very popular, but many people don’t realize anyone can learn to dance. With many excellent Dance Instructors in the area, and many places to dance, a Learn To Dance series may be popular.

MTTN is my favorite show. The hosts are so knowledgeable and their selections are continually amazing. Could Mitzi comment on the show while she's there with you this AM?

And have you ever thought of having someone like Lynn Warfel as a guest on RST?

I fear that in the station's efforts to be all things to all people your classical music roots may get more marginalized.

Music Through The Night has been a real joy for me.

I’m in the 89.5 Harrisburg listening area and always hear at the end of smart talk that the BBC news is coming on in Chambersburg. I would love to listen to it occasionally. I’m a sucker for news and radio talk shows since PBS/NPR is where I get my news

Thanks for your comments & questions so far, & keep 'em coming. Mitzi will respond to your specific programming suggestions, but since a few of you referenced this show, I'll take a stab at those.

Josh: I'm not certain what that entails, but I'll pass your idea along. We do offer the program as its own separate, downloadable podcast (see "on-demand" section of this site).

Jocelyn: Thanks so much. I'm pleased you enjoy the program and find it useful. Welcome to the area!

Laura: What an interesting suggestion, thanks! We have interviewed public radio personalities from time to time (among them: Frank Deford, David Sedaris, Paula Poundstone, Bill Littlefield) when they're available and appropriate for a given topic.

Again, more to come from Mitzi.

- Craig

Craig:
Thanks for the response. Just an FYI, there is already a spot for Radio Smart Talk on the NPR app. Click on "Stations (on the menu at the bottom)," then find "WITF." It pops up with "Listen Online" for the live stream along with slots for on-demand "Smart Talk" and "WITF Newsroom," but neither of the latter actually has any programs listed.

Josh: Thanks again - I'll pass this along right now to those ever-elusive "powers-that-be" who can hopefully make it happen.

Wow! How much fun was THAT, friends?! Thank you SO MUCH for listening and for getting in touch with us! Craig and I had a conversation after the program about having a "Talk to the Programmer" show on a more regular basis, maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I LOVE talking with all of you and am SO fascinated by your likes, dislkes, comments and questions. You sure know how to keep a gal busy, though, and while I PROMISE to answer each and every question and respond to every comment, it may take me a day or two (especially with our annual spring radio fund drive going on through Friday). But, for now - thanks for listening and for getting in touch and I can't wait to talk with you all again on the radio one day soon. As soon as I finish THIS message, I'll address your individual comments and questions one by one. Look for those appearing online today and tomorrow. Thanks again for your support. EVERYTHING we do is FOR you and BECAUSE of you! THANKS! Mitzi

Hi Gigi! Thanks for listening and for asking about the long-running PBS series' with Julia Child! My mother and I used to watch them together when I was a little girl and we would laugh and laugh (and learn a lot about cooking too!). As you know, witf ran all of Julia's PBS cooking shows for many, many years. To my knowledge, a re-packaged series is NOT available as of this writing, but I promise to keep an eye on all of our public television network offerings and if a series becomes available, you can expect to see it on witf at some point in the future. Thanks again for listening and for taking the time to write to us - I truly appreciate it. I guess it would now be appropriate for me to sign off by saying "BON APPETIT!" All the best...Mitzi

Hey Clark - good to know you're out there listening and THANKS so much for getting in touch with your question about BBC News! It IS true that listeners to 93.3 can hear BBC World News on that all news/talk station. If you were able to listen to all of Radio Smart Talk today, you heard me explain how difficult it is to program a dual-format (currently news and classical) radio station. I have to ask all of you to share the airwaves and understand that for now, when the classical folks are listening to music, you news folks might long for news - and vice versa. As I said this morning, the ideal situation would be for witf to be able to financially support two completely programming streams - one all news/talk and the other all classical. While we look forward to that future day, I'll remind you that we stream the 93.3 programming online at www.witf.org and it is also offered on our HD radio service. Perhaps listening that way might be an option for you. Hope this helps!

Hi Laura! Thanks for listening and for sharing your comments about Music Through the Night (MTTN)! I've been so priviledged to know quite a few of the MTTN hosts and producers through the years, and they are just as friendly and nice as they sound on the air - they are SO commited to their craft and to sharing classical music and they look forward to keeping company with you each and every evening! Since you're a fan, you may remember Arthur Hoehn, who sadly passed several weeks ago. You asked me to comment on MTTN and I have to say that I probably love it as much as you do. Just last night I was reading in my favorite rocking chair and turned on MTTN to help me relax after a long day of budgeting and fundraising here at witf! :-) Please know that we hope you never feel that any program is "marginalized" here but rather we have to make the tough decisions that are necessary sometimes for the greater good. Anyway - MTTN is still here for you and I'm glad you love it so!

Hi Susan! Thanks so much for listening & for taking getting in touch with us! You asked a VERY smart question which probably confuses most people who don't deal with television & radio programming every day. The answer is pretty simple, really .. you already know that witf is your hometown public media organization; your home for public radio, television, Central PA Magazine and witf.org. Well, in order to bring radio and television programs to your household and to Central PA at large, we must subscribe to the various networks which provide us with the programs we wish to air. So ... we pay affiliation dues to NPR, APM, PRI and PBS for the right to air their programming. THEN, we also pay costs for individual programs from those networks. So, as an example, we pay NPR about $12,000 annually to become an affiliate, then we pay more than $400,000 for the NPR shows that I choose to air. And we do the same with PRI, APM, PBS, etc. Write back to me if you still have questions

Part 1 of 2 ... Hey Michael - good to hear from you and thanks for getting in touch! You ask about the possibility of running television audio on radio ... it's a question that we actually ponder here at witf from time to time. I agree with you that programs such as The Newshour, Charlie Rose or the Tavis Smiley shows in particular would probably work pretty well on radio - it's definitely something to think about and thanks for bringing up this really intriguing idea! Also, your musical tastes seem to reflect my own - my home CD library is really "out there" - very eclectic - but if you heard me talk about this on the air this morning, you already know that the more "different" kinds of programming we offer actually splinters and narrows the audience to pretty low levels. There are public radio stations that air only classical music, others that air only jazz and still others that feature a singer/songwriter format only. It's just really damaging to air it all together!

Part 2 for MICHAEL: I needed to address your Dancing with the Stars comment separately: this makes me smile because if you have been watching PBS as long as I have, you may remember that FOR YEARS we featured BALLROOM DANCING! I am not kidding you -it's almost as if ABC should thank us for the good idea which began on PBS back in the 1980's! But then, if you think about it, PBS was really the first network to feature (smart!) reality television too! Do you remember "Six American Families" or the cinema verite documentary on the Loud Family from the 1970's?! If you're too young to know about this (yeah, I know, not everyone is an old 52-year-old like I am!), do a Google search. PBS truly started reality television 40-years ago! The problem is, PBS kind of left these things behind through the years and THEN the other networks got smart, snapped them up and branded them as their own. A GREAT idea, but if we reclaimed dancing, it might now look like WE were ripping off ABC!

HEY MARTY, JOCELYN, PHIL, JOSH & ROD ... sorry to make you wait, but I'm afraid I have to jump on to other things here at witf. I PROMISE you I will respond to your great questions online tomorrow! I'm on the air with Tim during Morning Edition between 6 & 9am, and then I'm back on the air between 10a & 1pm with Cary for Classical Air, but I'll make every effort to talk with you between 9 & 10am, when I have a break from fundraising! You made my day - thanks so much for listening and for writing and for caring about witf's television and radio services! It makes me so happy and energizes me so much to talk with our viewers and listeners who clearly love and know the product - and care deeply about it too! More tomorrow, I promise. Happy Listening, Viewing, Surfing & Reading! -Mitzi

I am sorry I missed the program today. I have two suggestions from the "old programming" area... I loved Mountain Stage, and Riders in The Sky. Friday nights were special, like part of the weekend programming. Any chance?
Also, we have a gem in Perry County which might expand WITF Presents: The Mini-Mountain Laurel Concert Series. You might want to explore recording them for replay!

WITF-FM is on at our house and in our car all day long. Thanks for suppling us with great programming. You inform us and inspire us. My favorite new podcast is Dinner Party Download. Any chance of that coming to WITF?
