Over the years, Bill Moyers’ Journal explored issues and ideas as wide-ranging as net neutrality, the costs of war, inequality in America, health care, drug laws, campaign finance, and on and on…Moyers has won nearly every major television journalism prize, and received a Lifetime Emmy award in 2006.
NOW won its share of Emmy awards, too. The series was called “one of the last bastions of serious journalism on TV” by the Austin American-Statesman. Tom Brokaw described it as “fearless about challenging conventional wisdom.” Rather than list the various stories NOW uncovered during its run, I’ll simply encourage you to tune into the final episode tonight at 10:30 on WITF-TV, when NOW will present “The Best of NOW: Issues and Insight.”
Both series have demonstrated a commitment to investigative journalism that I hope a new series premiering on public television next Friday night will continue. It's called Need to Know. Interestingly, before it's even hit the airwaves, Need to Know has come under fire from the media watchdog group FAIR. If you're curious about what's behind their concerns, check out PBS Ombudsman Michael Getler's post from last month about it.
In the meantime, enjoy tonight's final episodes of Bill Moyers' Journal and NOW, and rest assured that, through the resources of Smart Talk (radio and TV), WITF Multimedia News, NPR, the Newshour with Jim Lehrer, and a host of other programs and services WITF provides in various media, we'll aim to continue the traditions of in-depth, thoughtful, contextual news Moyers and Brancaccio have brought to you on WITF-TV each week.
