The brain and education

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Monday, January 30:

TEDxEnola is all-day education reform event scheduled for Wednesday.  According to the organizers, TEDxEnola will focus on cutting edge brain research topics and strategies.  They say national experts from the field will share ideas and research about the critical need for brain centered learning environments in today's schools.

The event promises to show what works best for student learning and success.

Two of the TEDxEnola participants will appear on Monday's Radio Smart Talk to discuss their own areas of expertise.

Dr. Katharine Beals is author of "Raising a Left-Brain Child in a Right-Brain World: Strategies for Helping Bright, Quirky, Socially Awkward Children to Thrive at Home and at School"

Dr. Jason Conway is a project director at Capital Area Intermediate Unit 13 and will address students' social skills.

witf is a partner with TEDxEnola.

Do you see any relation to a child's "hand domination"? My son is left-handed, left-footed, etc., is somewhat shy, but very analytical and capable of logical abstract thought. My daughter is "right-handed", has to work for her grades, but is an absolute social butterfly.

Regarding left vs right minded people. The differences are well known, one visual the other linear sequential. But what is not known, except as described in Menstroika: A Foundation of Insight --- Human mind only function naturally in "objective methods," that is with sensory information (the 5 senses). Whereas: in "subjective teaching methods"
most of that effort is lost to oblivion. Further; In order for a all minds to remember anything, any place or any person that mind must have a witnessed
storage slot in which to retain it. every aspect of the foundation listed above on that web site by Author Dellinger . . . is based on two aspects for education. an object seen and experience with it.
Thank you

PLEASE urge listeners to visit the TED.com site not only for the information to be presented at TEDX, but to learn the amazing things in which TED participants are involved.

A new video is posted every weekday and I consider the site the equivalent of post graduate exposure and study and growth...and all for free.

I have a bright student on the high end of the Asbergers Spectrum in a brick and mortar school. It is my experience that when you ask the school what they do, or are willing to do, for the student, the answer is, "whatever is necessary" or "meet the student where he/she is". The truth is, in these times of budgetary constraints and high number of IEP's in the classroom, there is no possible way these schools nor the individual teachers can actually keep up with all that is asked of them. It is clear to me that nobody wants to say this straight out.

I am a professor of American History locally, my class had trouble locating Chicago on a map. These are high school graduates. I am extremely disappointed in the basic education our children are receiving. What do your guests have to say about that?

Hello Joanne...as a former social studies teacher I am appalled at the lack of geographic knowledge. I once had a high school graduate think Alaska was an island.... (See any weather map). There is a baseline of knowledge that all students need. I think the complexity of and inconsistency across of the existing PA Standards blurs the baseline knowledge. Social Studies alone have five different sets of standards and each is written at different levels of complexity. Let us hope the development of the PA Core Standards in Reading, Writing and Mathematics improves the situation in those areas.
